Mapping San Francisco’s Hills

This is a Hipmunk post from Jodi Ettenberg of Legal Nomads.

Sam Maurer created Hill  Mapper (screenshot below) as a way to navigate San Fransciso’s major and minor inclines. Per an interview with The Atlantic Cities he muses that:

“One day while walking it occurred to me that the beauty of digital maps is that they can adapt based on your actual location – so I could make a map that showed not only how steep the streets were, but whether they’d be going uphill or downhill when you got there.”

Using Google Map’s elevation service, he constructed a colour-coded handbook to tackling those hills. While a mobile app is in the works, visitors to — and residents of — San Fransciso can avail themselves of a path to climb on his site, Hill Mapper.
